Metro Classic Preview: Tri-State Powers Go Up Against National Competition at Kean University

When it comes to good basketball, the state of New Jersey holds a lot of it. In a place where there is a lot of talent, there is one showcase that brings forth the best in the area as well as the best around the country.

That showcase is called the Metro Classic. Now in its fifth year of inception, the event has been one of the best places to see top-tier players. The event, which is held for three days at Harwood Arena on the campus of Kean University in Union, NJ, brings out great crowds every year.

The event boasts NBA alums such as Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers), Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves), D’Angelo Russell (Brooklyn Nets), DeAndre’ Bembry (Atlanta Hawks), Cheick Diallo (New Orleans Pelicans), Dakari Johnson (Oklahoma City Thunder), Wade Baldwin (Portland Trail Blazers) and Malachi Richardson (Sacramento Kings).

This year’s event boasts a who’s who of talented teams such as perennial in-state powerhouses Roselle Catholic (No. 1 in New Jersey), Linden (No. 5 in New Jersey) , Gill St. Bernard’s (No. 3 in New Jersey) as well as other teams from the state such as Rutgers Prep, St. Mary’s-Elizabeth (No. 11 in New Jersey), Hunterdon Central, Union Catholic and North Bergen.

Out-of-state programs that will be participating in the event are Covenant College Prep (CT), Long Island Lutheran (NY), First Love Christian (PA), St. Thomas More (CT), Christ the King (NY) and last but not least, Montverde Academy (FL), rated by USA Today as the No. 1 team in the nation. In addition to their nationally-ranked high school boys program, their post-graduate program, also known as CBD (Center For Basketball Development) Montverde, will also be making an appearance in this year’s Classic.

Also, this year will have a girls game between Rutgers Prep and The Mary Louis Academy (NY).
